Burlington Medical Now Offers World’s Lightest Lead-Free Radiation Protection

Newport News, Virginia, July 5, 2022 –Burlington Medical, the world’s largest radiation protection manufacturer, has launched the XENOLITE® 800 NL (No-Lead) apron series. XENOLITE® 800 NL is a lead-free, super-lightweight, flexible, and recyclable x-ray radiation protection apron.

Super-Lightweight Lead-Free Radiation Protection

It is no secret that lead aprons are heavy, most weighing over 10 pounds. According to the Mayo Clinic, a recent study shows that many radiology professionals report musculoskeletal pain from the weight of lead materials. For radiologists, technicians and others who wear this kind of protective equipment for hours every day, the benefit of switching to lead-free could be life changing. Burlington Medical’s engineers agree that this new apron series will lessen the physical repercussions of long hours wearing unnecessarily heavy radiation protection garments.

Flexible Advanced Polymer Technology

Lead-free products are made from two attenuating elements. The XENOLITE® 800 NL series uses antimony and tungsten, which are supported, encapsulated, and homogeneously distributed in a tough-but-flexible, high-tech plasticized Dow elastomer matrix. The result is that our newly developed XENOLITE® 800 NL series is the lightest flexible radiation protection apron on the market today.

Most Effective Lead-Free Attenuating Material

Antimony provides more efficient attenuation against the portion of the photon spectrum below the K-edge window of lead (35 – 88 keV), complemented by tungsten, which is more efficient for stopping higher energy radiation ( > 69 keV), and covers the K-edge window of antimony ( < 35 keV).

Environmental Benefits

Each year, over 150,000 lead x-ray aprons are disposed of, contributing to more than one million pounds of toxic lead metal waste across the globe. By developing environmentally friendly attenuation, like XENOLITE® 800 NL, LeeAnn Fachko, CEO of Burlington Medical, believes that this impact can be reversed. “Not only is this the lightest weight radiation protection garment on the market today, it is also one of the most protective lead-free materials because it provides radiation protection across a wider spectrum of kV thanks to the combination of antimony and tungsten. This material is flexible, comfortable and environmentally friendly.”
